SPRING - SUMMER 2024 - "LES AVENTURES DE NOTRE JEUNESSE"
DOMREBEL explores eternal youth for S/S 24, inspired by the struggles and anxieties of growing up, losing innocence, and the hedonistic tendencies associated with being forever young. “Les Aventures de Notre Jeunesse”, or “The Adventures of our Youth” introduces an ever-expanding ready-to-wear range decorated with original artworks created in studio.
The Montréal-based art collective drew inspiration from childhood favourite cartoons, creating elaborate original oil paintings and charcoal-based drawings that use a dark and playful humour to communicate real-life youth experiences. The S/S 24 color palette is heavily-based around the natural state of raw canvas and untreated paper, and how these materials get stained, weathered , and aged as they are worn or used by artists, whether in studio or during a walk in the woods.
Three distinct stories are told in S/S 24. First, oil paintings of characters are adapted to varsity jackets and shirting, through meticulous printing techniques and precise cut-and-sew print alignment. Second, playful drawings from the sketchbooks of the studio artists are decorated onto wool bomber jackets, linen shirting, tailored trousers, knitwear and denim, in elaborate screen-printing and embroidery treatments. Third, the brand introduces a permanent range of “studio wear” garments, which are items worn by the in-house artists while they create the seasonal art collections. Materials for this range are aged, treated and decorated with naturally-occuring stains, paint smears and abrasions that occur directly on the studio floor.
The majority of the collection features textiles and materials that are milled in Canada, and most decorations are applied in Montréal, in and around the brand’s atelier.
Notable styles this season include the introduction of outerwear in the form of sharp-fitting bomber jackets that are highly detailed with printing and hand-embroidery, knit cardigans with intarsia and hand-printed applications, and hand-treated linen materials used for shirting and trims. Loose-fitting tailored trousers and DIY scribbled denim jeans round out the wardrobe, which is intended for modern creatives that enjoy getting their hands dirty.
The lookbook campaign, shot in the brand’s Montréal studio, embodies the spirit of craft and creativity that the art collective lives by, with everyday studio fixtures like scaffolding and painting stations serving as background.
